The Evolution of the Web
The folks over at Google Chrome have teamed up with Hyperakt and Vizzuality to put together the 2011 version of the Evolution of the Web visualization. It’s an interactive timeline that shows how the current web technologies have evolved over time. The color bands in the visualization represent the interaction between web technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and WebGL and browsers that we use daily. Screenshots from past versions of todays browsers are a nice addition (Mosaic 1.0 anyone?). As you would expect, it’s all built using purely open web technologies and the data is provided by Wikipedia and CanIUse.
Pulse of the Nation
Researchers from the Northeastern University and Harvard University have released the findings of a studyabout the mood on Twitter over time. So, how does the mood of the United States change during one day?
The emotional measurements were plotted using a combination of cartograms and heat maps that quickly give access to the most important measurements: The amount of Tweets is displayed as the geographical scale and the mood is represented by the color of the county.
When Does Crime Happen?
Joe Golike and Sha Hwang of Trulia take a deeper look at when crime typically happens throughout the day in 25 big cities across the United States. The result, When does crime happen? is a set of interactive stacked area charts that allow for detailed comparison between different types of crimes and high-level comparison between different cities. On hover, a tooltip reveals more detailed information and the percentage of reported crimes per type and hour.
River Transit Maps
Daniel Huffman gives us an alternative view on how to look at rivers: Using the analogy of urban transit maps, he achieves a high level of abstraction an thus gives a clear overview over relationships and hierarchies. In the River Transit Maps series, Daniel has created maps of six large river systems like the Columbia, Colorado or Mississippi.
